Fear Learned

Other than new born puppies, all the dogs that come through our home are scared. Each of them has had some bad experience that they did not deserve. Skittles is our latest foster. We received her on Thursday, August 26th. She is a Chihuahua, Short Coat/Mix, under 4 months old. She was surrendered by her owners with a severely broken leg. Which now has a splint. After reading her paper work and I could feel her pain.

Skittles was placed into my arms and immediately began kissing my face. She stayed in my arms till we were home. Slowly, she left my arms and proceeded to explore the backyard. She peed and pooped, several times. Then back to my arms. She spent most of the day in our arms or laps. We tried to put her into a pen with bed, water and toys. The pen had everything but us. She wanted no part of it and cried.

Skittles slept with me the first night. The next day she was introduced to Missy and Buster (our dogs). She fell in love with Missy. Buster seemed to scare her a bit. He is a very large dog. Sitting outside, she watched both of the dogs run around the yard and disappear behind a bush. She was then startled when Buster ran past her. She let out a scream that sounded like she broke another leg. But, it was only Buster and he was more than 15 feet away from her. She has let out this scream several times, each time she was not in contact with anything. This little girl has learned fear.

Skittles is the only dog that will sit and sleep in my lap without wanting to explore the room. At night, she crawls under the covers and cuddles up next to me. She sleeps all night. Over the last few days, Skittles has become comfortable with her surroundings and now happily plays with Buster. He holds a stuffed toy in his mouth and she jumps up trying to take it away. She has even taken to barking at the neighbors to protect us. As I type this she has just curled up with Missy. She is learning how to work with her fear. Amazingly, the splint has not slowed her down. She just needs to know she is safe and loved.

Who Wants A Puppy?

Our puppies are ready to find their forever home. We named them after the Andrew Sisters. Patty, Maxene and LaVerne. They are adorable little fur balls. These happy Chihuahua, Short Coat/Mix girls are mostly tan in color. Maxene has a dark brown patch on her nose. Patty has a large patch of white covering her face.

Have been introducing them to water, by placing them into a kids pool with about 1" of water. Then pulling them out as soon as they move towards the side. LaVerne and Maxene are now climbing in to get a drink and cool off on their own. Looks like Patty will be doing the save very soon.

LaVerne is the largest and the most independent. She loves to explore. Maxene is shy but also likes to explore. Patty is the love bug and likes to crawl up into your lap. All of them love to run, chasing each other. When strange noises happen, all of them run to your lap for safety.

We are taking them back to the Sacramento SPCA on Friday. I expect them to be on the floor that afternoon. These girls are adorable and should be adopted very fast.

UPDATE: With the help of a wonderful Facebook posting, all of the puppies appear to have been adopted in less than 24 hours. :-)

Tiana and her 3 daughters.

This is our foster Chi Tiana. She is about a year old. Brown and white and weighs just over 8 lbs. She arrived at our house on July 14th and has made herself at home. At first she was scared but has worked her way into our lives nicely. Even Missy lets her sleep snuggled up to her. She loves to be around people. One of her favorite things to do is to chase flying creatures, like dragonflies and moths. Is house trained. She is comes when called and knows her name. Also, knows sit and stay. If she is not wagging her butt and tail, then she is sleeping next to you. Tiana has been a great mom. Taking great care of her puppies.

Tiana has 3 adorable pudgy fuzz balls for puppies. All three are tan. One with a dark brown nose. One with white coloring on her face and one all tan. Each of them are about 2 lbs. They love to wrestle with each other and take lots of naps.
